About the Church Accountability Initiative

The Church Accountability Initiative is a national advocacy effort committed to transparency, elder protection, and the preservation of sacred church property across faith communities.

This work exists because too often, congregations and individuals who raise legitimate concerns are met with retaliation, coercion, or exclusion instead of accountability. We support those navigating governance abuse, lack of transparency, and decisions that place sacred spaces and community stability at risk. Our approach centers education, advocacy, documentation, and public accountability.

The initiative was formed to ensure that the people who built, sustained, and sacrificed for these institutions are never dismissed, silenced, or exploited. In historically Black communities in particular, churches have long carried responsibility far beyond worship. They have served as anchors of care, continuity, and protection. When accountability fails, the consequences are not temporary. They are generational.

We believe accountability strengthens faith communities. Silence erodes them. This initiative is grounded in the belief that elders and communities must be included in the governance, stewardship, and decisions that affect the sacred spaces they built.
